Advanced Network Connectivity
Hi-Powered Networking offers network capabilities extending beyond traditional ISDN and xDSL technologies to provide premium services with an emphasis on speed and ultimate reliability.
Whilst most businesses are today looking at xDSL technologies to meet ever increasing bandwidth requirements whilst keeping control of costs, in some cases this technology can be found to be lacking. The reasons for this are summarised below:
xDSL is built on copper pair technology
The copper wires that DSL runs over are standard phone lines that may have been laid over 20 years ago. Water intrusion and other corrosive agents can cause both the insulator and core to break down, causing data errors that are often difficult to trace.
xDSL is not available in all areas
xDSL is available only where telcos have provided DSLAM equipment and expensive ATM backbone links to support them. Further limitations restricting xDSL to copper line technology limits the capabilities of DSL in areas serviced by a MUX, which has an optical fibre lead-in and thus cannot provide xDSL services.
xDSL has limited range
Because of the amount of power that can be reasonably put onto a copper pair, it is often not possible for all DSL services to be available – particularly when a site is a long way from a telephone exchange, where the Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) resides. Typically, the maximum range is about 4km and offers speeds typically maximised at 512k/128k Asynchronous. SHDSL offers services out to about 2km from the telephone exchange. The new technology ADSL2 and 4 wire SHDSL systems can extend range and/or bandwidth somewhat, but is not widely available at this time.
Telco xDSL service levels are lower
Even with premium business grade SLAs, xDSL has the lowest guaranteed uptime of all high bandwidth technologies, ranging from 95 to 99.5% uptime.
To provide a solution for customers requiring high bandwidth, but also mission-critical reliablity, Hi-Powered Networking offers a number of answers, including:
- Single and multiple Frame Relay. This service can offer up to 4Mbit/sec of bandwidth with 99.999% uptime guarantee. Depending on requirements, and location, this service may be provided over Digital ISDN (E1), Direct Fibre Optic, or Copper ULL (rare).
- HSSI – High Speed Serial Interface. This service can offer up to 8Mbit/sec or more with 99.999% uptime guarantee.
- Ethernet. Similar to the technology used on the common LAN, these links offer between 4Mbit/sec and 10Mbit/sec with 99.999% uptime guarantee.
